Asthma is a condition wherein airway passages become blocked and air can no longer pass during respiration, causing difficulties in breathing. Long term treatments usually work to reduce airway inflammation, while short-term medications work to reverse airway blockage by relaxing the bronchial smooth muscles.  Bronchodilators are one example of asthma medications that offer short-term relief.

Metered-dose inhalers are the most widely-used forms of medication administration of asthmatic drugs. An inhaler can be carried around by a person with the condition and administered as needed. Persons with asthma are also taught how to use an inhaler before they are prescribed the medication.

Another form of treatment to relieve asthma symptoms is the nebulizer or the breathing machine. A nebulizer changes asthma medication from liquid form into mist so that it can be easily inhaled. This machine is especially useful in infants and very young children and anyone who is unable to use asthma inhalers with spacers. A nebulizer needs the prescription of a physician and can cost from $200 to $250.
